Wits Self Service: How to Access Wits University Student Portal

Wits Self Service is the official online student portal of the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits University). It is designed for both prospective students (applicants) and current students to securely access academic and administrative services using a username and password.

How to Log In to Wits Self Service

Follow the steps below to log in to the Wits Self Service portal:

Step-by-Step Login Guide

STEP 1: Visit the Wits Self Service website at
👉 https://self-service.wits.ac.za/

STEP 2: Scroll down to the bottom of the page.

STEP 3: Access the Student Self Service login section.

  • For Applicants:

    • Username: Student ID (Person Number)

    • Password: Date of birth in YYMMDD format (e.g. 861224)

  • For Current Students:

    • Username: Your assigned student username

    • Password: Your current student password

STEP 4: Click Sign In to access your account.


Uses of Wits Self Service

The Wits Self Service portal is used by two main groups: Applicants and Current Students.


For Applicants (Prospective Students)

Prospective students can use Wits Self Service to:

  • Upload and manage supporting documents

  • Check online application status

  • Track NSFAS application progress

  • View scholarship and bursary application status (if applicable)

  • Check residence or accommodation application status

  • Verify and update personal contact details (email and phone number)


For Current Students (Registered Wits Students)

How to Reset Wits Self Service Password

If you forget your password or believe it has been compromised, you can reset it using the Password Self Service feature.

⚠️ Note: You must register for password self-service while you still have access to a valid password.

Password Reset Steps

STEP 1: Visit the MyWits Portal
👉 https://www.wits.ac.za/mywits/

STEP 2: Scroll to the bottom of the page and click
“Reset your password at anytime”

STEP 3: Enter your username and click Next

STEP 4: Create and confirm a new password, then click Next

STEP 5: Your Wits Self Service password will be successfully reset

Password Requirements:

  • Minimum of 9 characters

  • Must be alphanumeric (letters and numbers)

  • Password expires every 600 days

  • You will receive a reminder 20 days before expiry

Once reset, you can log in to Wits Self Service using your new password.
