What Is a NaTIS Document?
A NaTIS document is the official vehicle registration certificate issued when a vehicle is registered at a traffic and licensing department. It is one of the most important documents associated with your vehicle, especially when buying, selling, or transferring ownership.
NaTIS stands for National Administration Traffic Information System, and the document serves as legal proof of a vehicle’s registration, ownership, and titleholder status.
Why Is the NaTIS Document Held by the Bank?
Before 1996, vehicle registration documents were issued directly to the vehicle owner, even when the car was financed by a bank. Due to rising fraud, the NaTIS system was introduced to improve security.
Under the NaTIS system:
- The bank or financial institution financing the vehicle is listed as the titleholder
- The buyer is listed as the owner
- The bank keeps the NaTIS document for safekeeping until the vehicle is fully paid off
Once the vehicle loan is settled, the NaTIS document is updated to reflect the owner as both the owner and titleholder.
Important: To make any changes, you must request the NaTIS document from the current titleholder (usually the bank).
What Information Does a NaTIS Document Include?
A NaTIS document contains:
- The name of the bank or financial institution financing the vehicle
- The name of the registered vehicle owner
- Details indicating that the bank or financial institution is the titleholder
While the vehicle is financed, the NaTIS document remains with the bank. Without it, you cannot transfer ownership or complete certain licensing transactions.
How Do I Amend a NaTIS Document?
To amend your NaTIS document after receiving it from the bank, you must visit your nearest traffic and licensing department within 21 days.
You will need:
- The original NaTIS document
- Your original South African ID
- Proof of residential address
You must complete the Registration and Licensing of Motor Vehicle (RLV) form and pay the applicable amendment fee.
Note: Amendment fees vary from province to province.
Once processed, the updated NaTIS document will reflect you as both the owner and titleholder.
If you notice an error on the amended document, you can correct it by returning to the licensing department with your ID and proof of residence.
